You took my breath away
and so I thought
it would be much the same for me
to just give you my heart
entirely.
And such a grand gesture
would of course
win you over
forever.
Well, that was stupid.
You told me
what you love about me
is how my heart operates
from within me
out in the world.
“I couldn’t love a heartless you,”
you said.
“Put it back.”
I will, soon.
Just let me be breathless
a few minutes
more.
